Project - Minecraft Education Progress 4

Hello everyone, don't forget to post your update for this week's progress!  Based on feedback and progress so far, we are going to allow one more week for building.  If you are done, or close to being done, start putting together your two PowerPoint slideshows. Notes:
- You need to provide an update once a week on your blog
- Your update(s) should include a brief summary, telling me how it’s going so far, good/bad/challenges, with at least 3-5 screen shots
- Remember, for a linear course like this, the expected time to spend on class work per week is 1-1.5 hours
- The time allocated for this part of the project (the building, final two PowerPoints) is approximately 8-10 hours
- Updated project timeline - 1) This past & next week - finish your building, 2) Next or the following week - work on the 2 PowerPoint presentations due for the project (see Project details post below, from Sunday, April 19th 3) Next, a new part of the project - more details to be posted at the time - use Microsoft's MakeCode code builder, which is built into Minecraft Education, to learn more code (to build on some of the coding that we've already covered this year, for example in Swift Playgrounds and Alice)

Project - Minecraft Education Progress 3

Hello everyone, as mentioned last week, everyone is working at their own pace and at different points in the project.  As long as you are making weekly progress, in communication with me with questions/concerns, and posting this to your blog once a week, you will meet the project expectations!
Again, don't forget:
- You need to provide an update once a week on your blog - the next one is due tomorrow, end of day, Friday, May 8th
- Your update(s) should include a brief summary, telling me how it’s going so far, good/bad/challenges, with at least 3-5 screen shots
- Remember, for a linear course like this, the expected time to spend on class work per week is 1-1.5 hours
- The time allocated for this project is approximately 8-10 hours
- Project timeline - we will reevaluate at the end of next week where everyone is at;  however, the tentative plan would be: 1) Next week to finish your building, 2) The following week to work on the 2 PowerPoint presentations due for the project (see Project details post below, from Sunday, April 19th 3) Next, use Microsoft's MakeCode code builder, which is built into Minecraft Education, to learn more code (to build on some of the coding that we've already covered this year, for example in Swift Playgrounds and Alice)

Project - Minecraft Education

This project will run over the next number of weeks.  You may work on your own or with a partner.  Your task is to build the following structure(s) in Minecraft Education.  As you build, you need to take screen shots to show your progress.  When finished, you will then put together PowerPoint presentations of your screen shots for each of the worlds that you build (use a separate world if you make more than one).

You will need a computer or an iPad to download and run Minecraft Education.  To download Minecraft Education, go here:
https://education.minecraft.net/get-started/download/

(Use your One Drive Langley schools account to sign in)
*If you are unable to download Minecraft Education or do not have technology, please contact me.

Take a screenshot every five minutes or so to capture your progress in Minecraft Education:
Screenshot shortcut: Window Key – ALT – Printscreen

Expectations:
- This project is to take approximately 8-10 hours (we may adjust this as we go if necessary).  Keep in mind, you are only expected to complete a maximum of 1-1.5 hours of work on this class, per week.
- Important: You must make 2 slideshows for each one you build:

  • Slide show 1: outside construction – min 20 max 40 screenshots
  • Slide show 2: inside construction - min 20 max 40 screenshots
  • Also, once a week, you must post on your blog an update on your progress – a brief summary, telling me how it’s going so far, good/bad/challenges, with at least 3-5 screen shots.

- If you are working with someone else, each person is responsible for their own  screenshots, and their own PowerPoint presentations, with their own captions (labelled titles).
- Make sure your PowerPoints are properly edited and labeled (captions) and formatted.   It should look good! – use the same size and colour of text.
- When the project is finished you will post your PowerPoints to your blog, or share them with me.

If you are working on your own: choose One to build (finish early – build another!):
With a partner: choose Two to build (finish early – build the 3rd!!):

*Send me an email at cprobert@sd35.bc.ca and tell me which one you are going to make and who (if anyone) you are working with*

Burj Al Arab

Marina Bay Sands

Falling Water House

If you have any questions, email me at cprobert@sd35.bc.ca or send me a chat message in Teams.

Good luck and have fun!!!

Post Spring Break update

Hello IT9/10 class,

I hope this post finds you all well!! For InfoTech 9/10 going forward, we will continue to use this blog, and you will continue to use your blogs, for our means of communications for this class.

Next week, we will begin using Minecraft Education.  I will provide more details on this next week.  In the meantime, answer these questions below, by sending an email to me at: cprobert@sd35.bc.ca

1. Confirm that you have seen and read this post, and you are able to check this blog weekly.
2. Do you have a computer or iPad with an internet connection available?
3. Include your name so I know who you are (first name only)

Important for you to know per the district going forward: in a linear course such as this, the absolute maximum amount of learning a student should be expected to complete is 1 to 1.5 hours per week.  Please know that you will not be over loaded with work - we will manage this class work accordingly.

Take care,
-Mr. Probert

Lego Mindstorms (plus Swift Playgrounds) Wrap-up

On your blog, provide your answers and feedback for the Lego Mindstorms (plus SwiftPlaygrounds) Unit:

1. What did you accomplish during this unit?  This should be a thorough summary of everything you have done.  (Think back to the beginning when you fist unpacked the Lego - you first built the robot, then did the challenges using the Lego program on the computer.  Then, we moved on to making a robotic leg, building a turtle, then, using Swift Playgrounds on the iPad, getting the turtle to do things by coding.  Describe in detail, be specific, and include relevant screen shots.  This should be about 1/2 a page plus screen shots)

2. What did you learn during this unit?  Name 2-3, and provide an explanation for each.

3. What did you enjoy most about working the Lego Mindstorms?

4. What was the biggest challenge in building and coding the turtle.  How did you work to over come these?  Were you successful?  Why or why not?

5.  With the whole unit in mind, what other challenges or obstacles did you face?  How did you work to over come them?

6.  If you could do this unit over again, would you do anything different?  If yes or no, why or why not?

7.  Coding takes lots of practice to get better.  Would you like to do more coding?  (using different tools available, such as Microsoft Makecode or Code Combat).

8.  What is the coding language Swift Playgrounds is based on?  When you write code, what is the form it should take.  Use this example: you create a function called Run Fast.  How should this be written in Swift Playgrounds?
